It is over two years later, and I’m reading a marvelous book by Mary Beard, Professor at Newnham College, Cambridge about Pompeii — The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found (2008, Harvard Univ. Press). I’ll add a bit more about this in due course – an essential and very pleasant read prior to a Pompeii visit! kc

Great post guys. The differences in languages within the same country isn’t so unique to Italy, it’s the same in Spain with mainland north and south and the Balearics not to mention the UK with Welsh, Gaelic (Scottish and Irish) and even mainland Cornish. What a rich place we live in

i tried a wine when in italty and con not find in u.s.a.1st was il giandino di albino ristorante,specialita sarde e nazionali sa prenda. 2nd castelli romani rosso la selva do you know where it is sold.

I TRIED A WINE ONCE THAT WAS SUPERB AND CAN’T FIND. ON THE LABEL IT SAYS: CONTESINA 1984 (750 ML) “VINO DE TAVOLA-VINO ROSA, VAL LAGARINA.” DO YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS SOLD? THANKS

Loved reading your blog. My sister’s an ex-pat the past 20+ years living in and loving Siena. Sadly, I’ve only been three times in all those years. Still hoping one day to experience il Palio. Ma certo, so true about the vino di tavola. My brother-in-law has an incredible collection of italian wines in their private wine cellar, but for dinner and in general he goes to a local winery, fills up his huge jug, goes home and individually bottles (no label) his daily supply of red – in the garage!

Where did you teach last year?

Hi, do you remember our daughter Amanda? She was studying in Siena in 2005. We had a wonderful dinner at your house. She returned to Siena to get married in May 2007. You can see pictures at Webshots.com under Melielo. Wish we knew you were still there then!!
